Would you buy a home that “won’t last long”…?

I’m still seeing some agents using the tired ol’ phrase, “won’t last long” when referring to a house they have for sale.

Of course, what they really mean is, they believe the home will sell quickly.

When I read their ad stating the home “won’t last long” I think the property must be about to collapse in a falling heap of dust. What do you think?

Trust me, you’ll never get me saying a house “won’t last long”…!

Everything on track with real estate on the Redcliffe Peninsula

Well, real estate is humming along on the Redcliffe Peninsula and surrounding areas. I’ve just posted our Open Homes for this coming weekend (Sat. 17th October ‘09) on the Jan Jones Real Estate blog at www.JanJones.com.au/blog .

Ubuntu goodness? Not so sure yet.

Well my laptop finally is about to near the end of its natural life. Since buying it brand-new in about 2000 I’ve taken the HP standard-install system off, re-installed it (complete with a very buggy version of WordPerfect – and I was a big WordPerfect fan too), have installed and re-installed Windows XP several times and even at one stage set it up to dual-boot with XP in conjunction with an earlier version of Ubuntu.

To be fair, the only problem today with the aforementioned laptop is that it is getting noisier by the minute, getting much, much slower by the minute (or was… read on…!), and the screen keeps ‘burning up’ – it literally becomes overcome in grey-smokey pixels until it turns a purpley-grey colour then stops responding until you ’shake’ the screen to bring it back to life. Hook the laptop up to a monitor and that problem goes away.

Anyway for fear of it grinding to a complete halt, I’ve backed up all the data and taken the entire system off – and installed Ubuntu Hardy Heron.

Blimey. I listened (again) to someone who was raving on about the many benefits of Linux… but it honestly became a right royal pain in the whatever… when trying to get my wireless network card to talk to anything… became a right royal pain in the whatever trying to connect to the printer… generally speaking it became a nightmare but….

Now I have it set up and it’s just a plaything for me now. Browse the web a little. Use OpenOffice.org (the open-source and excellent alternative to Microsoft Office that I’m familiar with because I use it in Windows already) and that’s about it.

But if anyone says Linux is easy to set up out of the box and even easier than installing MS stuff I’d reckon they must be uber-geek. I’m geeky just not THAT geeky to pretend that a grandmother or five-year old could use it.

Do I love Ubuntu? Mmmmm. As I said earlier, it’s a bit of a plaything for now for me. Perhaps down the track I can give you a definitive answer on that. To be honest – I do love the concept – and I certainly love the new speed of the computer which is obviously due in part to what I am led to understand should be a leaner, meaner operating system than Windows anyway… combined with the fact there is now a comparatively free hard drive to play with… So it oughtta be quicker. Love that. And I think I’ll get to ‘love linux’.

One thing I should add though is… before installing Ubuntu this time, I tried, and tried and tried and tried over and over and over and over to install OpenSuse 10. Kept shutting down at the same point and no amount of Googling or searching otherwise proved helpful. So at least I can definitively say I prefer Ubuntu to OpenSuse…!!
